You may have heard psychotherapy referred to as “talk therapy”, which is a process that involves working with a trained mental health professional (such as a psychotherapist) to address emotional, psychological, and/or behavioural concerns. The goal of psychotherapy is to support individual's in gaining a deeper understanding of their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychotherapy also provides individual's with the tools and strategies to work through trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other concerns.
Therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) can be implemented based on individual needs.
Therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length and the number of sessions depends on the needs of the client. Depending on the client’s preferences, there may also be homework involved to support in practicing the skills and tools learned in therapy outside of session.
There are various modalities that can support individual's in meeting their treatment and recovery goals. These include:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A process that explores the interaction between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
A specific type of cognitive therapy that targets symptoms of PTSD. It focuses on supporting individual's in becoming unstuck from challenging thoughts.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
This therapy focuses on teaching skills related to mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.
Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
This is a short-term and goal focused approach in constructing solutions to problems.
